Not only that, but we’ll also lay out coastal designers’ best tips for nailing a coastal bedroom the first time.
Let’s start by detailing how to get the perfect coastal look.
Use A Neutral Color Scheme
You’re not tied to white walls, but I’m a fan of using white to demonstrate that it can be both crisp and cozy at the same time!
I adore introducing soft colors and textures with things like rugs, curtains, beddings, and decorations, which is exactly how I approach designing the coastal themed bedrooms in our own home.
Keep It Simple and Neutral with Coastal Decor
I’m all for white bedside tables—they blend right into the walls, making anything on them pop.
When styling your nightstands, go for fewer, larger objects to avoid a messy look.
My go-to coastal decor items for nightstands include:
- Oversized books
- Pieces of driftwood
- Small dishes or bowls for tiny trinkets like jewelry
- A chic clock
- Plants, fake or real
Stack Up The Layers
For that beachy feel, pile up your bedding and pillows, sticking to minimal patterns and opting for quilts over bulky duvets.
You want to pile on just enough layers to make it look snug but not have it be stuffy when you’re catching some ZZZ’s.
This approach offers a luxurious look without turning you into a night-time sweat machine.
And yes, you can layer up your window dressings too!
Our place has French doors instead of windows, but the same idea applies.
Pop some woven shades behind your drapes for an extra layer of depth. We did this in our study and it’s fantastic because it lets me control the amount of light I let through.
Incorporate Some Greenery
Here’s a hot tip: you can’t go wrong with plants!
They add a fresh touch to any room, and since I’m not the best at keeping them alive, I often go for artificial ones, which are just fine.
Maintaining your faux plants is easy—just a quick wipe down with a microfiber cloth now and then.
Mixing up the plant sizes adds a dynamic flair from a design angle.
Nail Your Light Fixtures
It’s easy to neglect light fixtures when you’ve nailed the rest of the room.
You can find some breathtaking lighting options without breaking the bank. Although you could splurge on high-end fixtures, there are plenty of budget-friendly pieces that still capture that coastal essence.
Fixtures like wooden bead chandeliers are real show stoppers, but you can also find something similar and cheaper online that’ll look just as good!
I’m also head-over-heels for the sconces above our bedside tables. They throw just the right amount of light for nighttime without needing to switch on the main light.
The rattan detail on the sconce arms adds a lovely touch, keeping the coastal theme alive.
Add Wood or Rattan Accents
To maintain a coastal theme in your bedroom, be sure to incorporate natural elements.
You can do this with fabrics (like rugs, bedding, and drapes) or with decorative items, such as the stunning floor mirror in our bedroom.
Adding simple art pieces can evoke the calm of ocean waves and sandy beaches, creating the perfect coastal bedroom retreat.
